Seeing people grow is what spurs me on, its been 20 stimulating years of teaching!

ART CLASSES TO SUIT EVERY PERSON’S NEED

Weekly classes

20180314_103955.jpg

Teaching is one of my passions, and the weekly classes I have given in the last 12 years has taught me so much about students and myself.

I take every student at their own pace and level, so you get an individual class in a group setting.

An added bonus is that students enjoy each other and learn from each other as well.

Private tuition

Sometimes there is a need for a student to have all my attention for themselves, often when preparing for an exhibition. I enjoy private classes immensely because of the intensity of focus the work gets. This also leads to fast results which is different to my normal approach.

Workshops

Workshops are a joy as I get to see a huge amount of growth in my students in a short time. In one to three days we work together intensely to bring them a new and improved set of skills. We make sure the venues and lunches are great, and there are breaks to get to know each other a bit more. What more can you want!

WEEKLY CLASSES 6 - 8 people

Weekly classes is geared towards the individual student. If you want help with all aspects of your painting journey, and are able to attend class every week, this is for you. Here we offer individual attention in a larger group setting, of up to 8 people. Brindley does demonstrations as he sees individuals and the group needs it, and so all students benefits from seeing that demonstration. Classes are 3, 5 to 4 hours depending on the students and setting. So there is lots of time to develop at your own pace.

The other benefit from group classes is that you are exposed to all the other people ‘s creative exercises from which you could learn and discover new creative stimulus. And since you are in a like minded group, the possibility is very high for possibly making new friends.

We are offering weekly classes at the moment in Pretoria at The Kretschmann Gallery at Menlyn Corporate Park.

This is the perfect opportunity for those who wants to enjoy classes in their own space and time, and wants individual tutoring.

If you or maybe a friend have a lovely space at home or studio that you think could be ideal for hosting such an event, this is for you. A fairly sized dining room or even a stoep is often perfect. Keep in mind that the space is comfortable for the purpose, also quiet enough without distracting elements that could be interfering, and has sufficient light. Natural light is preferred but florescent light can also work.

The first option would be to have a full 8 hour day session with a light lunch provided by you. A half day 4 hour session is available, morning or afternoon.

1: Full day 8 hour session for 2 or 3 people. R1000 per person.

2: Half day 4 hour session R600 per person.

If you live more than 50km away, transport costs will be added. We are next to Pelindaba.

Colour Sense

“How do you make those colours POP like that?”

How do you know what colour a shadow really is?

Starting with basic colour mixing we take you all the way to those difficult and seeming impossible colours.

Landscape

“My landscape doesn’t seem to have depth.”

Volume can be depicted in many ways. We show you all the aspects that changes in a landscape from foreground to faraway background, as well as everything in-between.

Seascapes

“The sea is too difficult, only masters can paint it.”

And so can you. Painting water and the atmospheric light around it takes a special set of skills. From choosing your reference to the end result, we show you how.

Portraits

“To portray character and emotion is extremely satisfying.”

To paint a good portrait you have to understand volume first. In this 3 stage workshop I teach you the different processes needed to paint a realistic and emotive portrait.

"What is great about Brindley is he allows you to go in the direction you want to go, but guides and mentors you to do the best work you can as well as showing you how to work in new mediums." -Jen Niehaus

Colour Sense Workshop - 2 days

20181117_154156.jpg

Day 1: One of the main building blocks to understand colour, is knowing how colour and light works together. How to apply this in painting. After we lay that foundation we can start looking at how we see colour optically, and how we perceive colour.

After this basic theory lesson we get hands-on with our first basic

colour wheel. We show you a method of mixing colours on your palette

(that we provide) and painting your own reference wheel and chart so you can keep track of what you have done.

We want to look after our environment so brush cleaning and handling of solvents are also explained.

After lunch we look at how colours react to each other in a short theory lesson before delving into a more advanced colour wheel.

Day 2: We look at tonal value, colour temperature and more advanced colour questions like local or reflected colour. After Brindley does a demonstration of a small colour intense painting we help you to make your own version. You go home with a painting that POPS with colour and the ability to make more like that.

PORTRAIT WORKSHOPS

Portrait workshop 1: Beginners course - 2 days

This workshop is a favourite as it takes one to the bare bones of portraiture. More then often these very needed foundational basics is what is lacking in making better portrait studies. We all want to skip to the advanced finishing, but in this course I lay out a better understanding of those basics that sets you up for much better results.

Starting with pencil studies of the basic shape of the head, we move to the basic form of the head. Then we start plotting in the features. Here placement and measurements are key.

After understanding form you need to learn methods of mark-making. We cover this in three different mediums, all in monotone (one colour), ending off with a frontal portrait in monochrome oil.

All these staged are done at the pace of the students, over 2 days.

Portrait Workshop 2: Intermediate course - 2 days

Perfectly designed to follow on the beginners course, this course takes you deeper.

From warming up with pencil studies of the head we look at how new angles are approached and understood. This is a serious volume study, laying the foundation for your own more advanced portrait.

Then we delve into the wonderful world of mixing skin tones. Mixing and applying of colours are demonstrated.

Students are tutored individually through all the stages of their own portrait, at their own pace. We do try to push for a good final result though.

Portrait Workshop 3: Advanced course - 1 to 3 days as needed

This advanced course is geared for the student that has already got the basics down. The purpose is to further define the use of light, colour, tone and different angles to portray emotion and character.

We practise the finer but very powerful tools that makes or breaks a portrait.

The importance of light and dark is introduced, how it gets used and manipulated to bring about effects.

This will be a very comprehensive course to help aspiring artists paint impressive portraiture.

When the student is done this coarse, they will feel confident in conquering most of the aspects that pertains to portraiture.

“I love being in class with all the other students who appreciates art. I enjoy Brindley’s selection of music, the coffee, and his sincerity in wanting every student to grow. I also admire his paintings that we can enjoy in the class and that inspires us very week. It shows us what is possible after years of painting." - Lou-Marie

After a lovely lunch we venture on with teaching and hands on exercises that broaden your understanding on approaching the subject . You would be shown how all the factors such as light, colour, composition and tone affect each other and how it is complimented by the chosen subject matter to make up the artwork. Part of this is aimed to set us up for day 2.

Seascape workshops

Seascape Workshop 1: Beginners - 2 days

As with all paintings your reference or the scene you choose to paint is the most important. With seascapes even more so.

We deal with which factors to consider in making the right choice of scene to paint. Light, atmospheric light, point of view and so forth are discussed. After setup we do a few small exercises to help you decide how to approach your painting. The rest of the time is filled with individual tutoring to make the most of your painting.

Students learn a lot in these workshops by watching me tutor other students.

Seascape Workshop 2: Intermediate 2 - 5 days

At the seaside

This is for people that have experience at doing seascapes and have a passion to grow in this theme.

In Seascape Workshop 1 we discussed the importance of your reference photo. Here we go and take our own.

Day 1 : We start of with a teaching session on the many factors of marine painting. Various small exercises to practise brush technique and colour mixing folows. After lunch we will discuss the aspects of photographing the ocean. Then late afternoon we all will venture down to the coast for a photo shoot, when the light is just right.

Day 2: The early morning starts with another photo session at the sea. Then we evaluate the photos of everyone and discuss the experience. Then we approach the practical aspects to making an artwork of your image. Basic lay outs begin to canvas.

Day 3 to 5: will then be spent working at making a painting with guided assistance as painting the ocean is very complex and time consuming.
